Meet Leroy Gordon “Gordo” Cooper Jr.

On January 29, 1951, Henrietta Lacks, grappling with excruciating pain and fear, sought medical help at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Upon examination, a small section of Lacks's tumor was excised and sent for analysis, leading to a diagnosis of malignant epidermoid carcinoma of the cervix. Tragically, Henrietta Lacks passed away on October 4, 1951.

The cells taken from Henrietta Lacks, now famously known as "HeLa Cells" – a name derived from the first two letters of her first and last names – marked a groundbreaking development in medical science. These cells became the first immortal human cell line capable of continuous reproduction.
